  • The Elements of the Oratorio - Music: Practice Theory Stack Exchange
I am a composer of simpler forms, but have been toying with the prospect of composing what I have been calling a "folk oratorio" composed of songs, small ensemble pieces and hymns To prepare for this project, I would like to know if there is a good source describing the various elements of the classical oratorio?
  • Describing the difference between a mass and an opera?
Oratorios These were considered as acceptable even during times when opera was frowned upon; Handel wrote quite a number of those, which are mostly operas but take their plot from the bible Bach's Easter oratorio is a different type which is more like a cantata, see below Cantatas: church music written for a certain date in ecclesiastical year
  • Workflow of composing an oratorio? - Music: Practice Theory Stack . . .

  • history - Is Beethovens 9th symphony the first piece that combined a . . .
I have to say no As you said, Beethoven's 9th symphony was the first choral symphony but it was not the first piece to combine chorus and orchestra There were already pieces from the Baroque that combined them, as the same definition of cantata says: Cantata: A sung piece, or choral work with or without vocal soloists, usually with orchestral accompaniment

Cadenza, sonata, concerto, symphony - what are the other differences apart from length? Which ones can contain which other ones? When did they come into existence as distinct forms?
  • On Tuning: Whats in a Temperament? (Well-Temperament vs. Equal . . .
The term " " is generally used for what you refer to in the end: a temperament that is not-equal, but is (reasonably) playable in any key The are the most well known of this sort It's my impression that many pipe organs are still tuned in this manner (so that is the context you'll often hear it in), due to way that the sustained nature of the notes works with the common repertoire
  • Why didnt classical music use drums?
This answer has a lot of interesting information, but I don’t think it answers the question You explain why classical music didn’t use a drum kit, but the question is about how drums are used within the music, which is quite different Plenty of non-modern genres (in Western classical tradition and elsewhere) use regular drum patterns as a constant driving force much like how modern pop
  • WHY do harmonics happen? - Music: Practice Theory Stack Exchange
The answers to the question ' How do harmonics work? ' were most interesting OK, that's the HOW it happens But WHY does it happen ? What is the physics here ? Why doesn't a guitar string vibrate at one frequency only?
