akin to Icel. ma[eth]ra.] (Bot.)
A plant of the genus {Rubia} ({Rubia tinctorum}). The root is
much used in dyeing red, and formerly was used in medicine.
It is cultivated in France and Holland. See {Rubiaceous}.
