Stonechat \Stone"chat`\, n. [Stone chat.] [So called from the
similarity of its alarm note to the clicking together of two
pebbles.] (Zool.)
(a) A small, active, and very common European singing bird
({Pratincola rubicola}); -- called also {chickstone},
{stonechacker}, {stonechatter}, {stoneclink},
{stonesmith}.
(b) The wheatear.
(c) The blue titmouse.

Note: The name is sometimes applied to various species of
{Saxicola}, {Pratincola}, and allied genera; as, the
pied stonechat of India ({Saxicola picata}).

Wheatear \Wheat"ear`\, n. (Zool.)
A small European singing bird ({Saxicola [oe]nanthe}). The
male is white beneath, bluish gray above, with black wings
and a black stripe through each eye. The tail is black at the
tip and in the middle, but white at the base and on each
side. Called also {checkbird}, {chickell}, {dykehopper},
{fallow chat}, {fallow finch}, {stonechat}, and {whitetail}.

2. (Zool.) A bird of the genus {Icteria}, allied to the
warblers, in America. The best known species are the
yellow-breasted chat ({Icteria viridis}), and the
long-tailed chat ({Icteria longicauda}). In Europe the
name is given to several birds of the family
{Saxicolid[ae]}, as the {stonechat}, and {whinchat}.
